The Final Days at MCS

At the end of May, Carolyn finished her third-year of the Early Childhood program (the kindergarten year)  at Montessori Community School.  She has been there since she turned 3.  She had the same primary teacher (Miss Karey) all three years.  It was a familiar environment that Carolyn knew so well, and one in which she was very sad to leave. I also shed some tears.

Dr. Seuss's wise words were an important reminder to us that final week,
"Do not cry that it is over.  Smile that it happened!"

We will be back to the school when Lizzie turns 3 in a year.  But, until then, it feels a little strange not going there for pick-up and drop-off every day.

Here are some pictures and videos the last few events of the school year.

THE FUN RUN
The kids learn about the importance of exercise all year through their science and PE lessons.  This culminates in a 10-minute run during the FUN RUN at the end of the year.   They learn about helping and giving to others throughout the year, and this culminates in them getting pledges during the Fun Run so they can donate to the school's chosen charities -- a couple of "adopted" navajo grandmothers and a handful of school-age girls in Ethiopia.   These are probably not the charities we would choose to donate to, but they resonate with the kids. During her time at MCS, Carolyn was able to meet with the navajo grandmothers, who shared their traditional arts during an assembly each year.  Carolyn and her class also wrote letters and sent pictures to the school girls, who usually send pictures and write letters in return, thanking the class for the school supplies and clothes that they send each year.  Carolyn ran fast because she wanted to earn as much money as she could for her "friends"

END OF YEAR CEREMONY
On the afternoon of the last day of the school year, the kids put on a short performance for the parents.  They displayed their artwork.  They "graduated."  They said goodbye to their friends and their teachers.
